Abstract
The purpose of the study was aimed to examine the relationship between parental child-rearing patterns and juvenile aggression among high school students in Korea, and to collect baseline data for the establishment of effective measures to prevent unexpected juvenile aggressive acting out.
In order to achieve these set goals, sampling were through three stage clustered random sampling method, and questionnaires were finally supplied to a total 1, 620 high school students, aged from 12 through 21. The actual number of cases put into the analyses were 1, 449 cases including 998 boys and 451 girls.
Data were analysed by CDC-174 computer of KIST, using SPSS program. Statistical methods employed were Chi-square test and stepwise multiple regression analysis. Results of the study were presented below.
1. The defective parental child rearing patterns tended to affect aggressive drives and behaviors among juvenile students. In comparison of both each parental disciplinary pattern on their children in the degree of influence, it was revealed that father¢¥s was more marked influential than mother¢¥s.
2. In the comparative study according to childrens¢¥ sex difference in the strength of influence under their parental practice, it was revealed that sons were influenced much more than daughters, that is, was relatively observed in significant relationship between erratic paternal practice and their son¢¥s aggression.
3. The paternal or maternal mistrust toward their children appeared to be most significant factors contributing to the juvenile aggression. The more were father¢¥s authoritative attitudes, domineering, closed -mindedness, self-centered, and punishment oriented child-rearing patterns, the higher occured their children¢¥s aggressive drives and behaviors. In the mother¢¥s child rearing patterns, on the other hand, their daughter¢¥s aggression tended to be increased under mother¢¥s closed mindedness and punishment oriented child rearing patterns.
4. Defective parental child-rearing patterns perceived by juvenile students were more significantly correlated with their children¢¥s aggressive drives than aggressive b2haviDrs. The mistrusting child rearing patterns of both sides of parent seemed to exert an influence upon the inner directed withdrawal aggressive drives such as runaway or truancy drive and suicidal impulsiveness, while father¢¥s rigid and punishment oriented child rearing practice provoked to act out through the mode of the outer directed aggressive behaviors.
